Higgsteria describes the excitement about the Higgs boson that ramped up ahead of the announcement at CERN on 4 July 2012 and the 36th ICHEP conference in Melbourne that follow that followed the event online.[1]

The term was first used in New Scientist in an article by Lisa Grossman (published online first 19 June 2012),[2] while the Wikipedia article (ver. 3 Feb. 2025) on Elizabeth Gibney claims that she dubbed the term in Times Higher Education om 19 July 2012.[3]
