The Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Protection Unit (HSE) was established in 2010, comprising the groups Radiation Protection (RP) and Safety Engineering and Environment (SEE). The unit corresponds to the former Safety Commission Unit (SC).

In 2016, with the appointment of a new Director-General, the CERN management reorganised some sectors. The HSE unit was expanded to five groups: Environmental Protection, People and Equipment Protection, Radiation Protection, Fire Brigade, and Medical Service.

In 2026 the unit was reclassified to a department,[1] within the Site Operations sector (SO), while still reporting directly to the Director-General. The department consists of five groups:

  • Radiation Protection Group: HSE-RP
  • Environmental protection Group: HSE-ENV
  • Fire and Rescue Service: HSE-FRS
  • Occupational Health and Safety Group: HSE-OHS
  • Transversal services group: HSE-TS.

The department (and former unit) is lead by Benoît Delille since 2021.
