CERN buildings with numbers on a map.

CERN has a large number of buildings for different purposes. Newcomers to CERN often struggle to understand the rational related to the building numbers.[1]

CERN has

  • about 703 buildings of all sizes covering a total footprint of 445000 m2,
  • about 293 barracks (huts, modular buildings and maritime containers).

This adds up to:

  • 1267 floors (excluding roofs and underground),
  • about 17 380 premises (excluding roofs and underground) covering a total surface of 672 000 m2.
