The quality factor or Q factor is a dimensionless parameter that describes how underdamped an oscillator or resonator is, and characterises a resonator’s band-width relative to its centre frequency. Higher Q indicates a lower rate of energy loss relative to the stored energy of the resonator. For an RF cavity it characterises RF losses in the cavity: an RF cavity having a higher Q factor is a more efficient user of RF power.
